A hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped plastic device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. It releases a synthetic hormone called progestin, which is similar to the natural hormone progesterone produced by the ovaries. Hormonal IUDs are highly effective, long-term, and reversible methods of contraception. They work primarily by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching and fertilizing an egg and by thinning the uterine lining to make it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant. There are several brands of hormonal IUDs available, including Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta, and Skyla. Each type varies slightly in the amount of progestin it releases and its duration of effectiveness, which can range from three to seven years. Mirena, for instance, is effective for up to seven years and is also FDA-approved for treating heavy menstrual bleeding. Kyleena and Skyla are smaller in size and release lower doses of progestin, making them suitable options for women who have not given birth.
